Puppy Mills

HSUS Pomeranian saved from puppy mill 1Puppy mills are large scale operations that force breeder dogs to produce litter after litter to support consumer demand for puppies. Puppies sold in pet stores or through Internet sites come from places filled with suffering, disease, malnutrition, and loneliness. Even the puppies themselves are often prone to a variety of diseases. Some die within days or weeks of purchase.

The Humane Society of the United States is working to stop puppy mills and they need your help.

Please watch this short video that exposes the cruelty of puppy mills. Then, you can take action by pledging to stop supporting the retailers that perpetuate cruel breeding practices.

Do you know about puppy mills? If you don’t — and even if you do — then you’ve got to watch these undercover videos at

Although the Sunshine State has fewer than 40 USDA-licensed commercial breeders, it is one of the states about which The HSUS receives the most complaints regarding sickly puppies. This is due to a thriving number of unregulated breeders, who are not required to be inspected by the USDA since they sell directly to the public, as well as many seemingly “upscale” pet stores that sell puppies from out-of-state puppy mills. The lack of any state kennel oversight allows these trends to continue. Recent complaints include: – Puppies sold by both pet stores and “private breeders” who are infected with deadly Parvovirus; – Puppies sold with severe parasitic infestations and respiratory disorders; – Puppies who seem fine at purchase, but soon suffer from serious congenital disorders, such as heart disease, liver disease, and/or malformed joints inhibiting a puppy’s ability to walk normally. Surgery for these disorders can cost many times the price of the puppy, so Puppy Lemon Laws provide only scant, if any, compensation.

What can you do?? Find your elected officials and tell them that you’re concerned about the inhumane treatment of dogs in puppy mills and want the puppy mill issue to be a priority for congress. Ask them to expand the reach of the Animal Welfare Act to include kennels that sell large numbers of puppies directly to the public and to ban the imports of puppies for resale.
